Tonight the Elements group show at the UForge Gallery in Jamaica Plain is opening. The show is themed for the four elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water(almost Captain Planet) and will be going on through out February with an opening recephttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.giftion tonight at 7pm. I submitted this piece, Um Akkeri (named after one of my favorite songs) that is inspired heavily by 1980's anime, which I've been immersing my self in. The film Legend of Sirius (シリウスの伝説) was particularly influential. The ending to this film has some of the prettiest animation I've seen in a while.

Sketchbook Project

My Sketchbook Project entry finally started it's national journey yesterday with it's first stop being the Brooklyn Art Library. I chose the theme "The Last of the People I Know" and the book chronicals memories from between 2003-2005 which were the years I made the transition from fearless art student into full time http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifworking adult.

My illustrations focus on my most pleasant memories from that period - hanging with friends and sussing out our futures over copious amounts of cigarettes and beer, pining over pet cats and mice, playing in silly bands and gazing at the tops of city buildings into the gradient of a magnificent sunset.

At the end of the book there is an envelope containing five photographs from this period in my life that I drew inspiration from, but you'll have to check out my sketchbook to see those! :) The Project is going on a World Tour, although only books from Australia and the UK will actually make it back over the seas. Kokeshi! I've more Kokeshi in the works. There will be five dolls made of each design. This is the first of them! Each doll is hand painted and adorned with faux fur tresses, flower and gem heart. Today I started working on a series of kokeshi dolls. I have a total of 10 designs I'd like to execute and make 5 of each design (plus one for myself... so 6 of each design). These girls are actually complete- but are drying. I made them from wood beads and candle holders using acrylics, faux monkey mohair fur, tiny cloth flowers, a gem and coated them in resin. They will be in my store soon. ;)

Should any of you have wondered where my artwork has been for the past month... This is where! I did a ton of commissioned portraits! This one was in the waiting the longest. I was commissioned by a lovely Miss Nina Pitocco to draw her in commune with my dirty secrets ghosts on piles of books because she loves to read! She also just joined Deviant Art for her photography, so add her to your watch! And there were more... lots more...

New & New

Small changes have come to fruition in my shop over the past year! The most notable change is packaging! Now all prints, most jewelry, buttons and everything else comes protected in cellophane envelopes with stiff backing or newly design packaging and cards. In ahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifddition to this shiny new look, my 8x10 or large prints are now printed on premium matte luster photo paper. This gives the prints an even more exact replication to the original art with its ability to betterhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif absorb the archival inks.

Unfortunately, with these new frontiers, I had to raise my 8”x10” print prices a little. In addition to prints, buttons have also increased slightly with packaging and increase in Etsy fees (Etsy has not literally increased their listing price, but they have decreased the length in which your paid listing lasts, resulting on more frequent re-listing and thus, more money spent). All of my other products will remain the same price and 5”x7” prints will remain on glossy paper at the same price.

Even with this small price increase, my prints and buttons are still incredibly affordable to everyone and by purchasing from my store you are showing you support for American handmade artisans and the DIY craft movement! Yeah!!

Happy 2012! This is what my New Year looked like: Subdued, dreamy and relaxed. I hadn't realized my blog had been neglected for the past two weeks I've been so busy with holiday shows, orders and just the holidays in generhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifal. We made our holiday season goal for sales, sold out of jewelry at ZaPow! in Asheville and I'm just two orders shy of hitting 400 orders on etsy!

I am in the process of organizing and signing up for new shows this year. Currently, I'm on the bill for my first show in New Hampshire, Queen City Kamikaze, on February 18th. I am also waiting for phase 2 of Anime Boston sign ups. If you didn't find me in the alley last year, it's because I was compressed into one loaned foot of table space due to missing sign ups during my big move to Boston. This year we haunted the AB website for sign ups and are first up on the list for a table- A FULL table! You won't have trouble finding us this year. Applications for Boston Comic Con and a lovely craft show in Salem, MA for May have also been submitted.

In addition to the scurry of show sign ups, I'm working on a whole slew of new art and designs, web redesigns, finishing up that damn press kit that I've been neglecting on and off all last year and in general working hard to make everything I do even better. Oh yeah, and I hear Blake is planning prototypes for plush sharks. This year is sure be a good one, even if it might be our last!

ZOMG! THIS ZINE IS TOTALLY THE BESTEST!!1!
This past weekend was a small whirlwind of craft shows. Yesterday we we're out in Western Massachusetts at the Stars and Skulls Crafty Craft Fair. This was our third year at the Stars and Skulls and our busiest and funnest yet! We shared some cube-age with our dear friend Rachel and her amigarumi delights (including a crocheted yellow submarine and a nice variety of catnip sushi) and were sandwiched between long time friend Karen Ducey's Moon and Sundries and Colin Tedford of Trees and Hills, a fabulous comic collective I belonged to when I lived in the wilds of the west. I drew some portraits, saw lots of good friends and met some awesome new people! Thanks to everyone who stopped by my table!

My Shades of Grey

We had a great time at the My Shades of Grey Craft Benefit this evening! I drew a few portraits , met a lot of great people and had some delicious food. What could be better than drawing portraits, talking about horror movies and drinking Heinekens? Not much. I also drew a new record for myself: a nine person portrait of all the employees of A Touch of Color hair salon in Lynn. It is pretty hard to fit 9 lovely ladies on one page. *0*

This kid's name was Brian and he had me draw him with his mum who he was selling jewelry with at the show too. Nerds of a feather flocked together - it only takes a Cenobaby to start up a two hour conversation about movies. :)

Tomorrow we'll be back in WMass at the Stars and Skulls Crafty Craft Fair! W00T!

I dropped off 5 pieces of work to my alma mater, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, last weekend. Starting on December 8th you can purchase framed Harajuku No. 5, Red Riding Siesta, Artichoke, Hair and one of my Dr. Sketchy's Burlesque drawings of the lovely Porcelain Dalya at the Annual Art Sale.

SMFA sent along this nice little press release about the sale...

Now in its 31st year, the Museum School Art Sale is the largest art sale in New England, and features work in all disciplines from more than 400 SMFA-affiliated artists—students, alumni, faculty, staff and more. Last week I was in NYC to see the PSSSsssT! group show at the Kraine Gallery Bar before the show closed on the 2nd. I snapped a few pictures of it's delights~ and there were so many!

Rock and Shock rocked our pants off! We had so much fun this year and met so many great people. Our booth was looking quite nice as well this year with our addition of an extra table and twice as much merchandise! I drew a slew of gorey portraits and a few cute commissions. Chris, Blake and I have successfully completed the entire Nightmare on Elm Street movie series (well Chris has watched them all a zillion times) in preparation of this years festivities as the guests of honor feature Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp. I wanted to do a Nightmare themed drawing for the convention... this is the scene I picked. Other contenders were Freddy licking Nancy over the phone and Freddy wearing Ray Bans. It's coming along nicely... but not complete yet.

A small smackeral of a sampling from last night show Org: Asylum.

The show was amazing. A full experience of all senses on the theme of asylum and madness: nurses, patients, dancer, performance art, body painting, poems, burlesque, bands... and I drew as much of it as I could. I turned out with a nice volume of figure drawings which I will take nicer pictures of this afternoon. I sold one last night, however, and the picture I took on the spot came out blurry, but you can get the gist:

There's a lot going on in the upcoming months - here is the low down:

September 24th I'll be at the Massachusetts Independent Comic Expo (M.I.C.E.) at Lesley University and will be sharing my table with the ever talented Shaanti Williams of Whut Good?.

September 30th you can catch me drawing amazing live performance acts at Org: Asylum at Oberon. I will be drawing live onsite and also selling my drawings as well!

October 12th through November 2nd the above drawing, 'Rose,' will be at the Psssst! Group Show at the Kraine Bar Gallery in New York City. This show will be _excellent_.

October 14th through the 16th is ROCK & SHOCK at the DCU Center in Worcester. I'll have a table full of SHOCK and will be hanging with Gary Busey and Rrrrrrobert Englund!

November 6th I'll be vending at a local Record and Craft Fair: JP Rocks & Rolls! No location yet, but it will be in Jamaica Plain.

And currently, I'm showing in Chanel Vs. Harajuku at the UForge Gallery until the end of the month.

And of course... there will be MORE as we approach December!

There was an excellent write up in Stuff Magazine about the Chanel Vs Harajuku show. Here's a snippet about my piece:

"In Harajuku No. 5, artist Kristilyn Stevenson reimagines a famous Chanel No. 5 advertisement that featured Marilyn Monroe dabbing the fragrance on her décolletage. 'The imagery flips the ideas of Chanel upside down and signs it with a street-fashion twist,' says Stevenson. She replaces the original's black-and-white photography with a cartoon-like combination of bold ink lines and gouache paint. And instead of a blonde bombshell, Stevenson portrays a fanciful femme who looks like Princess Toadstool gone 'Sweet Lolita,' a Harajuku style with an especially childlike take on the whole sexy-schoolgirl look. (Think: pink. And kind of creepy.)"

I'm in the Harajuku vs. Chanel show coming up at the UForge Gallery in JP. It will be up tomorrow at JP's First Thursday through September.

With Uforge's September theme of Harajuku vs. Chanel artists were faced with the fantastic challenge of creating an image that melded a fashion district known for it's fast and unusual teen trends and a fashion label that built it's name on timelessness and elegance. I've always been a fan of Harajuku fashion, even before Gwen Stefani marched back into the pop scene clad in super cute Japanese girls, so my piece features an Elegant Sweet Lolita (one of the many styles of Harajuku inspired by the Rococo era) striking the iconic pose of Marilyn Monroe in the famous Chanel No. 5 perfume advertisement.

It was finally nice and dry enough to take pictures of my drawings from this past Sunday's Dr. Sketchy's Session. All proceeds from the session went to Aliza's Brain Trust to help Aliza with living expenses while she is getting better and unable to host marvelous shows in Boston. Alix Mortis did an exceptional job as this session's model and host. I also got some stickers of Jojo's Aliza drawings and won the brain drawing contest. Matt and I were unexpectedly (well, does anyone see it coming?) harassed by a bum itchin' for a fix on our way out. I love you, Allston.

Since the last Dr. Sketchy's session, Aliza's Brain Trust has been set up for helping ease the recovery of the Boston Dr. Sketchy chapter's Host Aliza Shapiro. Aliza suffered a brain hemorrhage last week and has been in the hospital every since. She organizes the most incredible alternative arts events in Boston and makes art- which means she doesn't have health care. So in the wake of this horrible tragedy is the looming evil of medical bills and recovery hindering active self-employment. The Aliza Brain Trust has had a generous outpouring of donations and needs more. Healing your noodle ain't cheap! I donated. You should too.

This past weekend of extreme nerdism was at Connecticon in Hartford, Connecticut and marked my third year as a vendor (and fourth year as an attendee!). Naturally fun was to be had all around. I've missed the past four months of Dr. Sketchy's Boston Session- having hoped to go, but either had something come up, a show to vend or just didn't have the extra cash (curse you poor economy!). However, the stars were aligned and I was determined to attend my first Tuesday night session as I will, again, be at convention (Connecticon!) for the next Sunday session in July. By great fortune the model for the evening was the Bunny Collaborative performance group of Walter and Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys. Of course this stunning crew of artist made for beautiful drawings...

This past weekend was my return to Portland and first time at PortCon Maine. My friend Rachel came along and sold her first batch of amigirumi.

I was impressed by the organization and the amount of amazing cosplay, but I have to admit, it was totally weird I only was commissioned for five portraits. Regardless, we had a wonderful time, met some awesome fellow artists and got to meet the many Otaku of Maine.

Blake, Chris and I drove five hours in a thunder storm to Somerset, New Jersey this past weekend for Anime Next. We've never been to a convention further than New York City, so this was exciting new territory. The Otaku of New Jersey were very kind to us and it was refreshing to be amongst such an energetic and positive mass of fellow nerds. We sold out of our first batch of Lake Monster plushes, a good amount of skeleton t-shirts and A LOT of prints - THANK YOU. I also premiered some fan art ACEOs and did a few custom ACEOS.

Blake and I made some pretty stellar things this weekend: there's lake monster plushes with coloring books and a button, cute zombie princess stickers, new earrings and necklaces featuring bloody sharks and dapper hares... AND THE SHIRTS: Lovely mermaid and unicorn skeletons printed on super soft pale pink and light blue shirts. Also not pictured are some aquatic buttons, mushroom buttons and two new prints. I'll be posting these items in my Etsy store next week and will have them at all my upcoming shows.

The Maine Comic Arts Festival is one of the nicest, little conventions you'll ever attend or vend at. The people of Maine are very sweet, accommodating and interested in art. I was really happy to come back this year and bring along my friend and hip artist Cat to get her infected with the MECAF bug.
